Why Choose NGGC ?

We do gas connections day in and day out, so our expertise and knowledge ensures there are minimal delays, and that headaches are primarily resolved by us, not you. We challenge you to find other gas-connection suppliers who have the same quality of public reviews that we do.

NGGC provide a complete array of gas fitting services that include gas pipe and gas meter removals, installations, relocation works, live / dead / capacity checks, upgrades and downgrades in addition to professional gas connection advice that is free of charge.

We take direct responsibility to ensure all work carried out is done so safely and efficiently, communicating our progress every step of the way. We believe that gas related requests can lead to a compromise and that many other companies specialising in gas supply or connections often use technical industry jargon confusing customers as to what a job may entail. You may also find that they do not offer a complete service e.g. only installation of the gas pipes but not the gas itself, which can lead to frustrating problems further down the line when coming to actually fit a meter. Adversely to this, NGGC offer a unique approach concerning the gas industry, establishing your requirements from first contact right through to completion, therefore ensuring you have a single contact and company to deal with.

List of some of the services that we offer

NEW CONNECTIONS

To help us provide you with an accurate gas connection quote, we normally require your peak demand for gas usage, in kilowatts – in other words, with all your gas appliances switched on, how much gas you will be consuming.

UPGRADES & DOWNGRADES

In certain circumstances you may wish to alter the amount of gas that your current gas pipe and meter can deliver. For example, someone changing the use of a property from an office to a restaurant may use significantly more gas – and need sufficient extra pressure for appliances to work effectively.

RELOCATIONS

If you wish to move the position of a gas pipe and/or meter, we can help you relocate your gas service with the minimum of hassle. We will take care of the meter removal, gas pipe alteration and reconnection of the meter.

DISCONNECTIONS

Should you wish to disconnect the gas supply to a property, we will need to know what the reason is and where you would like the gas cut off. For instance, if a site demolition will be taking place, we will need to ensure that the gas is cut off at the site boundary to ensure there is no danger of striking live gas infrastructure.

GAS METERS

Metering which falls under the scope of ‘standard’ is always low pressure and can be defined as off the-shelf and very readily available. Standard gas meters can deliver a maximum of around 1680 kilowatts (kW).

NON-STANDARD GAS METERS

You will require a non-standard gas meter if you have a service pressure which is medium, intermediate, or high. A non-standard meter is also necessary if you have a gas load greater than approximately 1680 kW.

Standard Gas Meters

Metering which falls under the scope of ‘standard’ is always low pressure and can be defined as off the-shelf and very readily available. Standard gas meters can deliver a maximum of around 1680 kilowatts (kW). These standard meters are manufactured by a number or companies, including Actaris, and therefore vary slightly. Models that can be fitted by our gas meter installers are U6, U16, U25, U40, U65, U100 and U160.

Non-Standard Gas Meters

You will require a non-standard gas meter if you have a service pressure which is medium, intermediate, or high. A non-standard meter is also necessary if you have a gas load greater than approximately 1680 kW. Many non-standard meters are subject to longer lead times because they are often designed to order from new and subsequently produced on receipt of an order.

Gas Pressure

A gas meter is required at the termination point of any gas connection to obtain gas. This is for two principal reasons: to regulate the pressure leaving the meter to 21mb under normal operating circumstances, and to act as a tool to measure the amount of gas a customer consumes from the network, so that an appropriate bill can be issued by the supplier.

Industry regulations state that a gas meter should provide an operating pressure of 21mbar, in other words, when the meter is in use and appliances are working. On occasion, if a customer needs greater pressure and the service pressure in the mains can support it, then the outlet pressure can be increased with the agreement of the owner. Meters are in effect rented and paid for through gas bills.

Meter Housing

It is necessary in the first instance to liaise with a Gas Safe (previously known as CORGI) engineer prior to the installation of a gas meter. This is essential to confirm that a proposed meter location and gas connection termination point is practical, legal and safe, and has adequate ventilation. A low pressure meter can be situated internally within a certain proximity to an external wall, but any other gas meter on a medium, intermediate or high pressure connection will require the meter to be situated externally in a suitable housing (also known as a kiosk). A concrete base is also sometimes required if the meter will be free-standing.

The reason for the external siting of higher-pressure meters is the threat of a gas build-up and explosion. Types of housing include: free standing, bolt on (a box which sits on an external wall), built in (a box which half sits in the cavity wall of a building and half on the outside), and semi-concealed boxes which lie half underground and half above, next to a wall.

New Gas Pipe Installation & Connections

To help us provide you with an accurate gas connection quote, we normally require your peak demand for gas usage, in kilowatts – in other words, with all your gas appliances switched on, how much gas you will be consuming. In most cases, we also require a map or scale plan to show the desired gas pipe termination point, marked with a cross.

Gas Upgrades & Downgrades

In certain circumstances you may wish to alter the amount of gas that your current gas pipe and meter can deliver. For example, someone changing the use of a property from an office to a restaurant may use significantly more gas – and need sufficient extra pressure for appliances to work effectively. Similarly, a property with a large gas meter may be able to downgrade the size of the meter to make savings on gas bills. For upgrades or downgrades, we need to know the new peak demand of gas in kilowatts to be able to provide you with a free quote.

Gas Pipe Relocations

If you wish to move the position of a gas pipe and/or meter, we can help you relocate your gas service with the minimum of hassle. We will take care of the meter removal, gas pipe alteration and reconnection of the meter. An example of where a gas connection relocation may be required is when gas meters which are causing an obstruction or there is to be redevelopment at a property which means that a gas pipe and/or meter would be better positioned somewhere else. In these situations we require a map to show the current and the new meter positions, both clearly identified on a diagram.

Gas Disconnections

Should you wish to disconnect the gas supply to a property, we will need to know what the reason is and where you would like the gas cut off. For instance, if a site demolition will be taking place, we will need to ensure that the gas is cut off at the site boundary to ensure there is no danger of striking live gas infrastructure. Once all known gas supplies have been disconnected, engineers will provide a site clear certificate to confirm it is safe to carry out redevelopment. A map showing the meter position and where the gas is to be disconnected should be provided so that we can issue a quote.

More Information About Gas Pipes

Gas pipes, also known as ‘supplies’, ‘services’ or ‘connections’, are in effect the pipes that connect the gas main in the street to your gas meter. A gas connection on its own is insufficient to gain access to gas – a meter is always required. This is for two principal reasons: to regulate the pressure leaving the meter to 21mbar under normal operating circumstances, and to act as a tool to measure the amount of gas a customer draws from the National Grid network so that an appropriate bill can be issued by a gas supplier. The gas connection pipe that connects to a primary meter, in other words the meter for which a gas bill will be sent by a gas supplier, is solely sized for the requirements of the customer at that property, to ensure adequate supply pressure is maintained. A gas connection will never be shared with a neighbouring property, and the National Grid or an approved gas transporter company is responsible for safety and maintenance of the gas connection pipe during its lifetime. On occasion, mains gas pipes may need to be upgraded if a customer has particularly large gas requirements for a new installation or upgrade. This makes the timescale for work to be carried out much longer.

Gas Supply Contracts

We recognise gas connections isn’t simply about gas meters and gas connection pipes. To facilitate installation, every gas meter requires a pre-arranged gas supply contract to be in place, to ensure all gas taken from the connection and network is appropriately billed and paid for.

At NGGC we work with a large number of gas suppliers who can offer you a gas supply contract (subject to credit check). This ensures you get the best possible deal and flexibility to shop around so as to find you the cheapest gas meter, gas connection and gas supply combination, saving you time and money.
